At the time of presentation, symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma include abdominal mass, abdominal pain, enlarged abdominal girth, fluid in the abdomen (ascites), bloating, weight loss, fever, anemia, fatigue and digestive disorders. For several months before a confirmed diagnosis, some patients even complain of symptoms that are nonspecific. Indeed, peritoneal mesothelioma is a percentage of cases once the patient has other health complaints such as hernia, gallbladder, or pelvic mass.
Doctors who have experience in this field have noted that generally, patients with these symptoms six months to two years before diagnosis. Men usually go to the doctor complaining of a lump in the groin (hernia) or around the navel (umbilical hernia). For women, the first sign of a problem often occurs after a pelvic exam if a tumor was discovered.
In later stages of peritoneal mesothelioma, symptoms are increased cases of blood clots and bowel obstruction. There is a marked increase in the platelet count for 50% of patients peritoneal but this may be caused by various conditions, so in reality is of little help in diagnosis. Low albumin and anemia can also be one of the symptoms.
